DID YOU KNOW!
In 1842 two hurricanes struck the coastal North Carolina. There was damage from Wilmington to Currituck. The second one was most severe from Portsmouth northward, drowning livestock and washing away houses. It sank three ships - the Congress at Cape Hatteras, the Pioneer at Ocracoke, and the Kilgore at Currituck. We've had names like "Racer's Storm" in 1837 and the "Great Hurricane" in 1899. By the way, in 1885 Wilmington took a direct hit! The following time frame for landfall hurricanes... August 13, 1953 storm, August 30, 1954 Carol, September 10, 1954 Edna, October 15, 1954 HAZEL, August 12, 1955 Connie, August 17, 1955 Diane, September 19, 1955 Ione.... 20 plus more hurricanes have hit our coast since 1955. GET READY! One interesting story, my mother was pregnant with me when hurricane HAZEL hit the coast and went by Warsaw, NC. I was born on November 27, 1954. So I guess I was destined to be a Hurricane Mitigation Consultant. And that's the rest of the story...
